- Interview with Leland Y. Lee
Leland Y. Lee is a California Democratic Assembly member who feels first person shooter games should be sold to adults only. He plans on introducing two bills in the California State Assembly that would make it hard for individuals under the age of 18 to buy violent games. Homelanfed.com had the opportunity to ask Leland Y. Lee some questions about these new bills and his reasons behind introducing them. Personally, I doubt Leland Y. Lee knows anything about the gaming community... Sounds like another ignorant public worker to me =)
To be honest, a member of my staff was shocked when she saw the graphic violence depicted in many of these video games. As a mother, she felt it was unacceptable and brought it to my attention. We decided to look into the issue and found that there are over 1,000 studies conducted by distinguished scientists that showed a correlation between the viewing of violent media images and increased aggression and acceptance of violence among children. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, American Psychological Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Psychiatric Association issued a joint statement that said, "these 1,000 studies point overwhelmingly to a causal connection between media violence and aggressive behavior in some children." Regarding video games specifically, a policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics said, "Early studies of these rapidly growing and ever more sophisticated types of media indicate that the effects of child-initiated virtual violence may be even more profound than those of passive media such as television."
