Sony announces it has sold over 80 million PS3s

Over 80 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold since it launched 7 years ago (NYSE:SNE)

Can you believe it? It has been over 7 years since Sony released the PlayStation 3, and overnight the Japanese electronics giant reached 80 million units worldwide. This is a mammoth effort, driven by some truly awesome PS3 titles.

Games like The Last of Us, selling 3.4 million units in just three weeks, or Journey, which won six awards at the 13th annual Game Developers Choice Awards. Even more games are launching for the console in the coming months, and some big ones just recently like Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. We still have Gran Turismo 6, which launches in the holidays. The Gran Turismo franchise has sold a whopping 70 million copies worldwide.
