Last night, we posted a rumor that said that Amazon was preparing to offer its own smartphone for free with no contract tying you to a service plan. Unfortunately, VentureBeat has discovered an official statement from Amazon that states otherwise.

In an interview with Jessica Lessin, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, an Amazon spokesman said that it will not be launching a free smartphone this year and it has no plans to launch a smartphone at all during 2013. This last part of the statement is quite intriguing as Amazon did not deny that it would one day launch a smartphone. What do you think? Would you purchase a smartphone that ran a version of Amazon's mobile OS similar to what runs on the Kindle Fire HD?
