- Cheaper Itanium 2 next week

X-Bit Labs are reporting Intel will release a cheaper version of their Itanium 2 64-bit CPU next week on the 8th of September costing $774.

The new low-voltage Intel Itanium 2 processor based on Deerfield core will consume less power than Intel's current IA64 chips, but this lowered power consumption required the company to sacrifice performance of the CPU. The new IA64 microprocessor will function at 1.0GHz and will boast with only 1.5MB of L3 cache memory.

- AMD's Athlon FX beating Pentium 4 3.2GHz

Fuad over at the INQ will not be the most popular man at AMD today - or maybe he will, depending which way you choose to look at it. They have posted benchmarks of AMD's Athlon FX 64-bit processor, which from what we've heard will be a remarked Opteron CPU with no SMP support (939 pins compared to 940 of the Opteron - the extra pin gives SMP support), against an Intel Pentium 4 at 3.2GHz.

This isn't very good news for Intel since AMD's upcoming, slower clocked, 64-bit processor can beat out Intel's fastest clocked, 32-bit processor under Windows XP 32-bit which makes no use of AMD's 64-bit architecture.

WE WERE very close to Athlon 64 and Athlon FX last week but didn't get time to play with the systems. Still the world is too small a place to hide the numbers until the 23rd of this month.
