Today, reports have begun surfacing on a new 7-inch tablet that is being designed by HP and will release just in time for back to school season in the US. DigiTimes is reporting that sources from within HP's supply chain have confirmed that a 7-inch $99 tablet is already deep into mass production. The report goes on to state the the device will be sold exclusively in Walmart stores alongside a list of other sub-$100 Android tablets.
The tablet is said to feature a single-core Medfield Atom processor from Intel, but no other specifications have been leaked. We expect the display to be of the very low quality TN type as anything remotely close to HD or a high pixel density would automatically place this tablet out of the $99 range. Most likely RAM will be 1GB or lower, while advanced features like Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and nice speakers will be left out. We expect the tablet to run Android 4.1 or 4.2.1, but we could be wrong.
