EA launches Origin on the Mac, launches alpha version

I don't mind Origin, as it mostly sits in the background and all I use it for is Battlefield 3 - for now, until SimCity launches - but now the digital distribution platform from Electronics Arts has launched onto Apple's Mac OS X.

EA have announced they've released an alpha of Origin for Mac, and will give alpha testers a free copy of Bookworms from PopCap Games. Unfortunately, that's the only game you'll be able to play right now, as Origin's built-in games store isn't working in the alpha version. Cloud-based saves, and chats are available in the alpha version, though.

Another downside to this, is that some people will think that with EA launching Origin on the Mac, that they'll be able to play games like Battlefield 3 on their Mac's. This won't happen just yet, with EA saying that individual development studios will decide if it's worth their time to port the game and get it running well under OS X. Only a "few thousand users from the US and the UK are being accepted into the alpha.
