It wasn't too long ago that most scoffed at the thought of a 5-inch smartphone, but look at where Samsung have taken it with their Galaxy Note range of smartphones. Huawei are now stepping up to the mantle with news of a 6.1-inch smartphone.

The phone would sport a 6.1-inch Full HD 1080p display and a Huawei-designed 1.8GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. Huawei's Senior Vice President, Yu Chengdong, confirmed that the company was working on the 6.1-inch smartphone when speaking with Chinese social network Weibo, on Wednesday.

Chengdong added that the smartphone would be more powerful than its closest competitor, the Galaxy Note II, and would sport a "cooler" design, slimmer bezel, better grip, more stunning display and longer battery life. He said that consumers who are interested in grabbing a bigger smartphone should wait for Huawei's 6.1-inch device, as it's better and most of all, cheaper. It has been reported to have the name Ascend Mate, and would be announced at CES in January 2013.
