Talk is circling that HTC could make the Nexus handset, with HTC's Jeff Gordon telling Tech Rader that Google "hasn't chosen its Nexus partner", but he also notced that "all the manufacturers are crossing their fingers".

These comments are being taken as acknowledgement that HTC are included in the group of companies hoping to score the Nexus-making deal. HTC did play a huge role when Android first hit the market with the G1, and built the first Nexus-branded device, the Nexus One, which shipped in early 2010.

Google's Nexus branding is considered the pinnacle of what Google expects from the Android experience. The latest Nexus-branded product, Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, is still considered a niche product, but it does represent one of the most advanced, refined Android-based devices on the market.
