Amazon acquires Yap, will compete against Apple's Siri

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: Nov 10, 2011 5:47 am

Amazon have loved Apple long time, oh come on, you know I was joking. Amazon wants to take a chunk out of Apple and by doing so, it needs to compete. They've got various tablets to address this, but nothing to address Siri on the iPhone 4S. Until today.

Amazing have acquired Yap, a Charlotte, N.C.-based company. It was reported that Amazon was interested in the company's speech recognition technology so that it could compete directly with Apple's Siri, the voice-controlled assistant that people seem to love.

Until just recently, Yap's servers were being used by Sprint and other carriers to convert voicemails to text. It was also shipped on a bunch of Sprint's Android-based handsets, and Yap even featured as an iPhone app. On October 20, Yap voicemail was discontinued.

We should hear more on Yap from Amazon in the coming weeks.
