iPhone hacked to work with serial ports

iPhones used to troubleshoot servers
| Mobile Devices News | Posted: Nov 2, 2010 5:02 am

It turns out that the iPhone's data port can be a little more versatile than you think if you've got a little ingenuity and a need for….serial port connectivity? A group of IT guys, tired of lugging around laptops and terminals to troubleshoot older servers, fashioned a connection that allows data transfer between an iPhone and a serial port connection.

This requires a jailbroken iPhone running Cydia, but it allows the IT workers to troubleshoot and maintain servers from the iPhone. According to IT worker Chris Pollock, "the real benefit in all of this is that there are so many console packages for iPhone in Cydia now that you can have a fully functional computer, as useful as a linux box, but without carrying around a laptop." See? Old tech and new tech can get along nicely!
