Windows Phone 7 GSM-only until 2011

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Sep 17, 2010 10:49 pm

Sorry Verizon and Sprint fans; it seems that you are going to have to wait a little longer than the rest to get your hands on a Windows Phone 7 device. CDMA support for Windows Phone 7 has been pushed off until 2011. GSM networks are more prevalent worldwide and were therefore made a priority by Microsoft.

According to senior product manager Greg Sullivan, Microsoft "doesn't have unlimited resources" and "had to make some trade-offs" to meet their schedule. This leaves all of WP7's eggs in AT&T and T-Mobile's baskets for their U.S. launch, and even T-Mobile has not confirmed launch-day availability of WP7 enabled devices. Sullivan is "very confident" that a CDMA update will happen in the first half of 2011 and the rest of the carriers will be able to jump on the WP7 bandwagon.
