Samsung unveils dual-core Orion CPU

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Sep 7, 2010 5:06 pm

LG was boasting today that it would have new smartphones on the market by Q4 2010 with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU inside. Tegra 2 is being billed as the only dual-core mobile processor by LG right now. That won't be true for long though.

Samsung has unveiled a new dual-core CPU design called the Orion. The processor has a pair of 1GHz Cortex A9 cores and is aimed directly at mobile devices. The processor supports 1080p video playback and 1080p video recording.

One interesting feature is support for three screens. The processor also promises five times the 3D graphics performance of current generation CPUs. The chip won't come until sometime in 2011. The exact launch window for the Orion CPU isn't known. Assuming LG sticks to its schedule with the Tegra 2 smartphones it should still get to be first with dual-core in a smartphone.
