The Hammer gets a new name

By: (more) | Posted: Apr 25, 2002 1:34 am

Chances are you already know, and if you don't, you've probably been asleep like myself. Various sites sent in news about the AMD Hammer processor getting a new name, Opteron.

"The origin of the AMD Opteron brand name means, simply, the best. In choosing this name, AMD is conveying that the processor will give users the option to run either 32-bit or 64-bit applications, with optimal performance on both," said Ed Ellett, vice president of marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group."
You can read more over at AnandTech and AMDZone. It would seem as well that Microsoft have been able to get the Opteron 64bit processor working under the 64bit version of Windows XP, at least an email has emerged on the Net which suggests this is the case. Exciting times are ahead!
