Seagate Momentus XT 'hybrid' drives land down under

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Jul 19, 2010 8:31 am

Seagate has just introduced its new Momentus XT hybrid drives to market in the land of Oz which utilize a form of technology not seen in other companies' drives at this time.

The word hybrid is the best way to describe the inner workings of the drive; a combination of solid state storage and traditional mechanical platter storage is used together to give improved performance characteristics whilst also giving larger storage capacities at cheaper prices to fully fledged SSDs.

The folks over at APC were able to get a good scoop on the the new Momentus XT series of drives from Seagate the other day, including a video of Seagate running a benchmark demonstration for them that gives a good idea of performance versus a traditional Hitachi 7200rpm 2.5-inch HDD in identical notebooks side by side.
