Toshiba MBF2xxLRC HDDs debut

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Jun 22, 2010 5:04 pm

Enterprise and business users that run a data center with lots of storage know that 2.5-nch HDDs can save power and money compared to 3.5-inch drives. The problem is that moving to smaller 2.5-inch HDDs often means moving to hardware that support the smaller drives.

Toshiba has announced a new family of HDDs for the enterprise user that is called the MBF2xxLRC line. These drives are available in 600GB, 450GB, and 300GB capacities and are 2.5-inch form factor units. The drives are placed into a 3.5-inch bracket allowing them to be used with existing storage devices and servers.

Toshiba claims that the smaller 2.5-inch HDDs can save up to 70% power at idle compared to 3.5-inch HDDs. The drives spin at 10,025 RPM and use the 6Gb/s interface. Toshiba will ship to OEMs in July.
