PS3 OtherOS loss could hurt US Air Force

Air Force will keep using PS3s on hand

It wasn't so long ago that Sony announced it was killing off the OtherOS feature in the original PS3 consoles. The official reason for this was that it was a security risk. The lack of the OtherOS feature is not a big deal for most, but it was enough of an issue for some users to start a class action lawsuit.

One of the possible issues with losing the OtherOS feature comes from the Air Force. The Air Force used the PS3 as a cheap way to get hands on the powerful Cell processor that Sony makes. The PS3 is in use in some Air Force computing facilities right now.

The Air Force says that it will continue to use the PS3s it has, but if they break or need repairs the computing system it has is in trouble. The PS3 is by far the cheapest way to get the cell processor according to the Air Force. You have to wonder if this wasn't one of the reasons Sony removed the OtherOS feature.
