Toshiba crams 750GB and 1TB capacities into 2.5-inch HDDs

Whilst the SSD market continues to heat up with faster controllers and lower pricing, makers of mechanical hard drives are doing their best to find ways of cramming as much capacity into 2.5 and 3.5-inch drives as possible.

Toshiba has been working hard in this area and it's paid off with the company unveiling two high-capacity 2.5-inch drives; a 750GB model that's 9.5mm thick with two platters, and a even more impressive 1TB model thats 12.5mm thick, using three platters.

Both drives use the SATA 3.0Gbps interface and run at a speed of 5400RPMs, carry 8MB buffers and have access times of 12ms.

Toshiba is said to be sampling the 750GB drive as of next month.
