Energizer Duo Charger and USB Charger software has massive security vulnerability

By: (more) | Connectivity & Communications News | Posted: Mar 8, 2010 5:27 pm

Energizer has been selling its Duo Charger and USB Charger for a long time now. Both of the chargers can charge rechargeable batteries directly from the USB port on your computer.

Energizer offered software along with the chargers that could be downloaded from the Energizer website for PC and Mac machines. The Mac software is reportedly fine, but there is a massive security issue with the Windows version of the software and it should be removed from your PC immediately.

Energizer reports that it is working with the US government and US-CERT to determine how the software was infiltrated with a backdoor program called Arucer.dll. The backdoor opened computers running the Energizer software to access from remote systems allowing remote users to view directories, send and receive programs and files, and execute software. User will need to remove specific files from their registry in addition to uninstalling the Energizer software.
