Intel's Larrabee project delayed - first chips won't go retail

By: (more) | CPU, APU & Chipsets News | Posted: Dec 7, 2009 2:22 am

Turns out Intel's discrete GPU project 'Larrabee' won't be reaching the limelight anytime soon with word coming in that Intel has pressed the big red cancel button on its first generation Larrabee chip.

It's been said that the main reason why the plug was pulled was due to both the hardware and software being too far behind schedule and performance lacking too much for Intel's expectations at this point in time.

However, the Larrabee project in itself will continue to roll on and the current stage of development will be used for the R&D of future Larrabee chips. Intel still has every intent to cast a shadow over NVIDIA and AMD's turf and it will be very interesting to see how well this plays out for them in the long run.
