Microsoft Windows 7 On Flash Drives?

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: Jun 30, 2009 5:53 am

The latest news on Microsoft's upcomming Windows 7 concerns the medium on which Windows 7 will be offered for those who don't have CD or DVD drives.

This mostly is in consideration for netbooks and tablet computers, often which do no have optical drives due to size constraints. If Microsoft were to release Windows 7 only on a disk, many users would be left without an option to upgrade.

As a result, Microsoft is considering making Windows 7 available on USB Flash drives. Microsoft is also in talks with Best Buy's Geek Squad trying to figure out how to best streamline Windows 7 upgrades. Microsoft is also eyeing downloadable copies of Windows 7, which would allow users to utilize their own flash drive to upgrade as well.

If all of this fails, users would still have the option of buying Windows 7 on a disk and install it through an external optical drive. However this seems to be quite unattractive to a majority of consumers as it would require them to purchase the external drive, thus increasing the cost and complexity of the upgrade.
