Toshiba's Spurs Dulled by lack of options

By: (more) | Posted: Apr 20, 2009 7:52 pm

Toshiba announced a new line of notebooks running its new Quad Core Spurs Engine Chip. This chip is supposed to improve internet video playback quality and performance. It can clean up those horribly over compressed You Tube videos for you without breaking a sweat.

But all is not joy in Toshiba-Ville. It seems that the new Video Processing chip will only work in full screen and only with Internet Explorer.

Toshiba had no explanation the new chip will not work with other browsers at the time of this writing.

Toshiba's Spurs Dulled by lack of options
The function will work when playing video fullscreen -- not when it's played in a window on a Web site -- and only when using Internet Explorer. Toshiba couldn't immediately explain why it won't work with other Web browsers.

The SpursEngine was developed by Toshiba and is based on the same architecture as the Cell Broadband Engine microprocessor that powers the PlayStation 3 console. While the Cell contains a Power PC core and eight "Synergistic Processing Elements" cores, the SpursEngine contains only four of the SPE cores.
