Mafia 3 needs GeForce GTX 1080 for 1080p 60FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 10, 2016 8:07 PM CDT

Mafia III has been involved in quite a sticky situation with the developer releasing the game with a capped framerate, but with the new patch now out - the framerate caps is removed - yet super-powerful graphics cards like the GeForce GTX 1080 are still only capable of 1080p at 60FPS.

Mafia 3 needs GeForce GTX 1080 for 1080p 60FPS

GameGPU.com used an Intel Core i7-5960X at 4.6GHz on a GIGABYTE X99 UD7 motherboard, with 32GB of DDR4-2666MHz RAM and various graphics cards, as you can see from the benchmarks below. The quickest one of them all was the GP104-powered GeForce GTX 1080 with 56/61FPS for minimum/average, respectively - while the GTX 1070 scored 46/50FPS for minimum/average, respectively.

AMD's now older Fiji-based Radeon R9 Fury X with its 4GB of HBM1 was capable of 50FPS average, while the new Polaris-based Radeon RX 470 4GB model was capable of 35FPS average - not bad considering its a sub $200 graphics card. But for Mafia III developer Hangar 13 and 2K Games, we have to ask - why the hell is a $699+ graphics card only capable of 60FPS at 1080p?

John Carmack: VR developers need to make better VR games

Oculus CTO John Carmack has said some crazy things over the years, with a standout moment at the Game Developers Conference earlier this year where he said: "Minecraft for GearVR will be the biggest VR game of 2016". Well, yeah.

Carmack talked at the recent Oculus Connect 3 conference, where he said that the current VR development community "need to be harder on ourselves". He added: "We are coasting on novelty, and the initial wonder of being something people have never seen before. But we need to start judging ourselves. Not on a curve, but in an absolute sense. Can you do something in VR that has the same value, or more value, than what these other [non-VR] things have done?"

Carmack discussed "objective measurements of quality", specifically mentioning that VR developers need to improve UI design, with the Oculus CTO noting the absence of voice control in VR apps and games, reiterating the long loading times in some VR titles.

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Oct 10, 2016 5:36 PM CDT

While James Bond actor Daniel Craig had some harsh comments for the franchise while on the publicity trail for the last film 'Spectre', including the now infamous "I'd rather break this glass and slash my wrists", it seems that after a break from the role he's not totally closed off to returning.

Announced back in December, JRPG Tales of Berseria was confirmed to be yet another addition to the Tales PC lineup. Whether it would launch the same day on PC as on consoles, however, was unclear, but now we have the answer: yes (sort of). The game will hit PS4 January 24 in North America and January 27 in Europe; the Steam launch will take place January 27 in all regions.

Star Citizen singleplayer campaign delayed indefinitely

Star Citizen's anticipated singleplayer campaign module, Squadron 42, has been delayed indefinitely.

Star Citizen singleplayer campaign delayed indefinitely

Cloud Imperium Games announced Squadron 42's delay during last night's Citizencon livestream, saying the campaign is no longer on for 2016. Star Citizen dev Chris Roberts affirmed that "most of the base technology is now complete," but the team needs time to optimize GPU and CPU implementation, shore up the game's objective-based NPC AI, and fix object container streaming.

Seeing as the studio has yet to fully polish and optimize a single level of the 28 mission campaign for release, it's easy to see why the entire Squadron 42 campaign has been delayed. The team is currently trying to finalize one mission to pristine polish and then show it off to the community.

Mass Effect: Andromeda release date possibly leaked

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 10, 2016 1:14 PM CDT

BioWare has been quite secretive about Mass Effect: Andromeda's release date, but the release date may have been leaked ahead of schedule.

Mass Effect: Andromeda release date possibly leaked

Mass Effect: Andromeda will release on March 21, 2017, according to an Amazon listing for the Art of Mass Effect: Andromeda artbook. The listing assures the artbook, which comes out on March 21, 2017, will "release simultaneously along the game."

BioWare has also listed the artbook on their own storefront, but the release date is "early 2017" and there's no mention of a simultaneous launch alongside of the game. This adds credence to the leak as BioWare would assuredly hide any mention of a simultaneous release to protect the release date's secrecy.

Mysterious Mars has a flag and Yemen wannabe owners

Lana Jelic | Science, Space, Health & Robotics | Oct 10, 2016 12:26 PM CDT

We've learned a lof about Mars in the past decades thanks to probes and rovers that are studying the closest planet to Earth. If everything goes as planned, Mars could become our second home someday. Elon Musk has ambitious plans in colonizing Mars, and he isn't the only one who wants to send people to the Red Planet. Just last week Dennis Muilenburg, the CEO of The Boeing Company, stated that he is convinced that the first humans to set foot on Mars will get there by a Boeing rocket.

Whoever sends the first people to Mars will set a huge milestone in the history of humankind. It will mark the first time a human being has set foot on another planet, and it could happen during our lifetime. Can you just imagine how exciting it must have been for people around the world sitting in front of TVs and watching the first Moon landing? We could experience the same, but this time the space exploration will get us much further.

If and when the first people reach Mars, it will also mark the first time a person walked on any other space body other than Earth since 1972 when Eugene Cernan was the last person to walk on the Moon.

The biggest selling point of Skyrim: Special Edition is the game's conversion over to 64-bit, which removes the restrictive 4GB RAM cap limit for PC mods. With an unlimited RAM capacity mods can now take full advantage of high-spec PCs and offer even more amazing user-created content. Console versions of Skyrim: Special Edition also get mod support, and Sony has decided to allow PS4 Skyrim mods after all.

Half-Life VR might be in the works for HTC Vive

A bit of mysterious code might indicate Valve is working on a Half-Life VR game for its Vive headset.

Half-Life VR might be in the works for HTC Vive

A few bits of code for "HLVR" were recently found in a new DOTA 2 update, and this could be Valve's way in communicating with its community without making any sort of official announcements. "HLVR" code has been found many times in the Destinations Steam VR app, and its believed the HLVR code is linked to Valve's experimental in-house VR prototype made of Half-Life assets that was used to test out the Source Engine's limits in VR.

"We've said, 'Let's take some existing art and see how it fits,'" Valve programmer Jeep Barnett told Kotaku in an interview back in 2015. "So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher-all those different fun things-and see how they play in VR. But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do."
