GTX 1080 Ti hits 2.5GHz on LN2, breaks 3DMark record

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Mar 14, 2017 7:00 PM CDT

NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is the best graphics card on the market - yep, I recommend it over the Titan X which costs $1200 but barely outperforms the GTX 1080 Ti that costs $699 - and now, we have a new 3DMark Time Spy world record.

GTX 1080 Ti hits 2.5GHz on LN2, breaks 3DMark record

Legendary overclocker 'Kingpin' used an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition under LN2, hitting a huge 2.5GHz, with the 11GB of GDDR5X memory clocked from 11Gbps to 12.5Gbps. The memory being overclocked to 12.5Gbps is a big deal, as we're looking at over 500GB/sec of memory bandwidth - all without using the next-gen HBM2 standard that AMD will be using on their upcoming Radeon RX Vega graphics cards.

The overclock in question: with Kingpin using an Intel Core i7-6950X processor overclocked to 5.1GHz, EVGA X99 motherboard and one of EVGA's GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition graphics cards.

'Rogue One' director reveals why third act changed

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Mar 14, 2017 6:10 PM CDT

At this stage, fans know that the last act of last year's 'Star Wars' spin-off 'Rogue One' was heavily edited and changed courtesy of re-shoots and post production, but it was never really revealed why.. until now.

'Rogue One' director reveals why third act changed

Speaking to Slash Film, Director Gareth Edwards revealed what didn't quite work with the original concept.

"What used to happen, and you can get a sense of this in the early trailers, the transmission tower for the plans was separate from the main base on Scarif. To transmit the plans, they had to escape and run along the beach and go up the tower. In cutting the film, it just felt too long. We had to find ways to compress the third act, which was quite long as it was. And one real, fast, brutal solution was to put the tower in the base, so they don't have to run across the beach and do all of that stuff to get there. That became a decision that eliminated the shots you see in the trailer of the back of Cassian and Jyn and the AT-ATs. That was some of the reinvention that happened. It was all to do with compression... As cool as many things are, and they really are, you can't outstay your welcome."

Asked if the original ending might someday end up on a more deluxe Blu-ray release than what we're getting next month, Edwards isn't sure. "That's a decision way above me! I don't think there's any plans to do it." As Trump would say, "SAD!".

Samsung's new Galaxy S8+ spotted in gold variant

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are just weeks away, with various leaks teasing its slick style with barely any bezel - and its super powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor - but now, we're looking down the sights of the gold colored variant.

Samsung's new Galaxy S8+ spotted in gold variant

Someone has gotten their hands-on a purported Galaxy S8+ smartphone in gold, rocking a huge 6.2-inch display - while the Galaxy S8 will have a smaller 5.7-inch display, both not being that much larger thanks to the all-display front. There's no physical Home button on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, a reverse decision on the S7 and S7 edge with its physical Home button.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 later this month, with a full retail and shipping push in the third week of April.

Brazilian store sparks rumors about the purple Galaxy S8

Now, the Brazilian online store Submarino posted a poll on their website asking the visitors to choose their favorite color option for the upcoming flagship, and the colors are Black, Silver, and Amethyst. This probably confirms the rumors, and it will certainly be interesting to see the new color option for Samsung's devices.

Amethyst is a bit unusual, but that just might be a trend this year since Huawei introduced a not-so-typical green version of the P10 and P10 Plus.

NVIDIA's orders TSMC to make next-gen Volta GPU on 12nm

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Mar 14, 2017 7:12 AM CDT

NVIDIA just launched its Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with a huge performance crown earned at $699, and now we're hearing that TSMC is taking orders for next-gen HPC (high-performance computing) chips for AI applications from both NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.

NVIDIA's orders TSMC to make next-gen Volta GPU on 12nm

The new report is coming from DigiTimes, which reports: "TSMC will fabricate NVIDIA's next generation Volta GPU using a 12nm process, said the paper, which added that the Volta GPU will be paired with NVIDIA's Xavier supercomputer chips for self-driving car applications".

NVIDIA is currently having TSMC produce its 256 core Pascal-based GPU and dual-core Denver 2 CPUs for their recent Jetson TX2 supercomputing platform, all on the 16nm process. NVIDIA's next big leap will be to Volta, on the smaller 12nm node - where things will really get interesting.

Intel acquires self-driving car firm for $15.3 billion

Anthony Garreffa | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Mar 14, 2017 3:28 AM CDT

Intel is making a massive investment into autonomous car technology, acquiring Israeli self-driving car firm Mobileeye for a huge $15.3 billion.

Mobileye has technology inside of 27 carmakers' vehicles, with technology from cameras to sensors around the car, to emergency braking technology, lane assistance systems, and more. Intel has been working with Mobileye for a while, teaming with BMW last year to make a fully autonomous car by 2021.

Intel isn't just throwing down its $15 billion investment for nothing, as the company sees the autonomous car market becoming a mammoth $70 billion market by 2030. Intel boss Brian Krzanich made it very clear that by combining Intel's processing power with Mobileye's advanced automotive computer vision systems, and its partnerships with carmakers, as something transformative. Krzanich said: "Together, we can accelerate the future of autonomous driving with improved performance in a cloud-to-car solution at a lower cost for automakers".

Quake Champions goes free-to-play, champions cost money

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 14, 2017 2:13 AM CDT

Quake was my original FPS love, with thousands of hours pumped into the original (and rocking my 3dfx Voodoo 4MB graphics card at the time) and into its sequels, Quake II and Quake III Arena. Now, we have the news that Quake Champions, being developed by id Software once again, will be a free-to-play game.

Quake Champions goes free-to-play, champions cost money

We've been introduced to one of the Champions already, but id Software's Tim Willits has come out saying: "At its core, it's a free-to-play game," Willits said, "with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions. There are a number of Quake players that just want to play their Quake, right? And they are familiar with the business model of our previous games, and they are totally fine. 'I want to buy the game. I want to start playing. I want to have access to all the Champions".

He continued: "But then we also understand that we want to get as many people into the game as possible, especially outside of North America and Western Europe, where we have a massive fan base. So we want to have the flexibility to have a free-to-play option for those people".
