Final Thoughts

Overall, we have a pretty good package here. The external drive can be accessed normally through Windows, but the real treat is the easy to use backup utility that comes with the device. Whether you want a full system backup that allows you to recover from a dead drive or a selective backup for all those music and movie files, the Backup Star handles the task easily.

Backup speeds were impressive. Less than 10.5 minutes for a 7.5GB backup means that you won't be chained to the process for a huge amount of time. For those wanting to see the speeds in another format, I went ahead and ran a HD Tach test for your convenience.

Average and burst speeds are very close to the same showing you get a very steady flow of data over the USB channel. For those with USB 1.1, the speeds will be a good deal slower, but the results we gathered today speak well of this device.

As far as price is concerned, I was able to find the Backup Star for under $55US online. At this price it costs about $20 more than other external drive units that aren't designed as a backup device. So while it isn't the cheapest unit on the block, it has features that most other comparable external drives don't have.

Bottom line... If you've been looking for an external hard drive enclosure, there are many choices to consider. If backing up vital data in a safe, reliable and easy manner has also been considered, then take a hard look at the BYTECC Backup Star. With excellent data transfer speeds and a simple backup utility, you no longer have an excuse for not having a full system backup of your vital data.
