ATI Radeon X1K Overclocking - Testing R520 and RV530

By: Shawn Baker | AMD Radeon GPU in Video Cards | Posted: Nov 7, 2005 5:00 am

High Quality AA and AF

In our High Quality tests we bump the Antialiasing (AA) and Anisotropic Filtering (AF) up causing the card(s) to be put under more load.

This usually helps us remove the CPU limitation. We use 4 x AA and 8 x AF as this is quite a common setup for most people who are venturing into the AA and AF area.

We see a slight increase in performance when we turn AA and AF on but it isn't anything too exciting.

We again see that the X1800XT really benefits in Half Life 2 when overclocked. The X1600XT while at over 30FPS still wouldn't be playable with the minimum causing unsmooth game play. At 1024 x 768 you wouldn't have any problems playing with AA and AF on with the X1600XT.

Doom 3 shows slight performance increases with a similar result to Half Life 2 with the X1800XT only offering a playable experience with these settings. The X1600XT would have to drop back to at least 1280 x 1024 for smooth game play.
