nVidia's next big thing - GeForce 7800 GTX (Part 2 - Performance Comparisons) - Benchmarks - Quake 3 Arena

With the NDA being lifted just over 24 hours ago and our GeForce 7800 GTX sample reference cards rocking up just as we predicted, we are going to have a look into the second part of our article in regards to performance. We will have a quick look at our test system setup along with our general feelings on the new GPU.

Quake 3 Arena is a real-world OpenGL benchmark that we have been using here at TweakTown for quite a while now because it has proven itself to be one of the best gaming benchmarks around to compare a wide range of different products. Quake 3 Arena is getting very old, but is still one of the best ways of testing video and PC systems for any instability and best performance hence the reason we are still using it today.

Why did we choose to remove 3DMark 2001SE and keep Quake 3 Arena? The answer is simple - we are getting closer and closer to breaking 500FPS average and while it wasn't done this time, we expect some of the pre-overclocked cards along with a slightly faster processor will yield these results.

We can honestly say that at 500FPS it will be time to retire the very faithful Quake 3 as one of our benchmarks.
