Author: Shane Baxtor SUMMARY: Last week ATI caused a stir in the enthusiast community by releasing a "Doom 3 Hotfix" driver labeled 4.9 BETA for users of Radeon graphics cards which promised increased OpenGL performance for the new game. They also released their official Catalyst 4.8 drivers which promise even more performance increases. Follow Shane as we benchmark all the new drivers and see all the results for yourself.

Performance Improvements

As with most CATALYST™ releases performance has increased in various situations. The following performance gains are noticed:

Direct3D driver efficiency has improved considerably. Significant performance gains are noted in multiple "CPU-bound" cases, including 3DMark2001, Aquamark 3, Comanche4, Dungeon Siege, and Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. Typical improvements are in the 1-5% range.

OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.

ATI are currently working quite hard it would seem on their OpenGL optimization as they have seemed to receive quite a bit of bad feedback regarding results in Doom 3. We have just added Doom 3 into our benchmarks and we will see what kind of performance jump if any we get with the new drivers.

Let’s get started!
