Serial ATA RAID Controllers - Promise, Silicon Image, Highpoint and nVidia - Benchmarks - Boot Time & 3DMark 2001

In our latest article we compare the Serial ATA RAID performance of controllers from Promise, Silicon Image, Highpoint and nVidia. We compare both 32-bit PCI based solutions as well as nVidia's new native nForce 3 250 solution on two revision 2.0 Western Digital Raptor hard drives in RAID 0.

Boot Time


In this test we manually measured the time taken to boot from POST to when Windows has completely loaded.



There is about 5 seconds separating most of the controllers which works out to be around the 15% mark. As you would expect the native option from nVidia is the quickest.


The reason the Highpoint is so much slower is due to the amount of time it spends reading the BIOS screen.


3DMark2001 SE


3DMark2001 SE is a part of the popular 3DMark series. By combining DirectX 8.1 support with completely new graphics (including the GeForce4), it continues to provide benchmark results that empower you to make informed hardware assessments.



The difference in score here is purely that fluctuation point in 3DMark. Gaming performance was not increased because of the RAID or moving the controller away from the PCI bus, as we expected.


The only real world gaming performance increase you will see from native is in games such as Battlefield Vietnam where many textures and so on need to be loaded. The loading times of games will be decreased in this example.
