SUMMARY: It's time for a little something different today. Julian has checked out the services of a US based company called ColorWare who specialize in the art of coloring your electronic devices such as Apple iPod's and Microsoft Xbox's. Put on your artist hat and read on!
Now, on to the pictures. As previously stated, we were very impressed with the overall quality and look. While all colors are perceived from a subjective standpoint, we here at TweakTown feel the colors chosen to be applied give the products an elegant and “lone-wolf” look.
- Apple iPod
Beginning with the Apple iPod, we had chosen ColorWare’s ‘Midnight Blue’ color. By adjusting the contrast, using the settings menus, we were actually able to create a very nice color scheme throughout the iPod.
Let’s face the facts, hundreds of thousands of iPods have been sold in the U.S. and Canada alone; baring this in mind, it’s hard to call your iPod unique in any personal terms. Having it custom painted not only makes yours standout, but also can come in handy when differentiating between your iPod and one belonging to another person.
For those of you worried about the warrantee on your iPod being void, you have nothing to fret about because the iPod is not being dismantled. Additionally, ColorWare kindly offers their own 90-day warrantee as part of their quality of service guarantee. And, as expected, the iPod’s functionality remains the same: the scroll-wheel continues to work perfectly, and the buttons are left untouched (wise move by ColorWare).
One of the most unique aspects of ColorWare’s painting process is the variety of tones produced by the final product when exposed to certain conditions of light. In bright light situations, the Midnight Blue shined brilliantly, boasting its metallic finishing. However, in low-light situations, it gave the look of a solid navy blue.
As notable in the image above, the high finishing gloss placed on all of ColorWare’s products proves quite reflective in lit situations. This finishing touch greatly improves and protects the new look.
Now, on to the iPod dock - yes that’s right, ColorWare also offers coloring on Apple’s unique iPod docking station. For the dock, we chose a different shade of blue: ColorWare’s ‘Techno Blue’.
Unfortunately, a fault noticeable when personally handling the dock plagues this servicing job. Unlike the other items sent to ColorWare, the iPod’s dock appears to have been serviced with far too many layers of gloss or perhaps one very uneven layer. Waves of paint were noticeable for the first time. We highly doubt this reflects the jobs performed on other iPod docks, and we expect this to be a one-time handling mistake.
