Transcend create one of the cheaper modules out of the group and for this reason you wouldn't expect a lot from them. Transcend source their chips from different companies and for this reason some batches of memory will perform better then others. While this keeps the cost down, the problem people have is that your friend Joe got a set of Transcend modules that overclocked reasonable well and their own Transcend modules didn't do too well.
This method helps keep costs down but can be annoying for a lot of people. Most the time people who are after particular memory like this will simply purchase it expecting no more then DDR400 speeds. Let's see how these particular modules we have here today go when put up against some of the more fierce competition in the market right now.

The Transcend packaging is very much like the Kingmax one. You simply have a nice cardboard box that is designed to keep the memory safe. Retail packing is quite necessary for memory like this as it is something that you want to be seen through a cabinet - not hidden away in a storage room. For example, if someone walked into a shop and wanted to buy some PC3200 memory they would simply see this nice stand out package and hopefully (for the company's sake) proceed to buy it. To compete in the mainstream market memory packaging can be quite important.
These particular memory modules use the Samsung chips which are quite well known for being able to stick it to some of the bigger fish on the market. Like a lot of companies that try to keep cost to a minimum, Transcend have opted not to use a heat spreader. Transcend use a standard TSOP chip with nothing out of the ordinary which makes it quite difficult to say too much. The overall module is very basic and is quite bland looking. Aimed at the average user we will see what it can do when we try and get a few more MHz out of it. In all honestly, when you look at these modules compared to some of the eye catching modules from other companies these days, it's like a time warp!
