Introduction

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 02

We've really tried to get as much mileage out of the EVGA GTX TITAN SuperClocked video cards we received the other week. Since we got hold of them, we looked at the EVGA GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked in a standalone review, along with a look at the overclocking performance. Because we got a pair, we also had the opportunity to look at SLI performance.

Today we get a chance to finally put the last piece of the puzzle together and find out just how SLI overclocking goes. This is something we're really excited about because when we looked at the overclocking performance of just a single card, we saw some fantastic performance gains. Not only that, when we added a second card into the mix in SLI mode, we also saw some awesome gains in performance across the board.

Today we're hoping with the combination of both SLI and overclocking we're going to be able to see some truly awesome performance. Considering the price tag that is associated with the setup, we expect nothing less. What's going to make this even more interesting is now that we've seen the AMD Radeon HD 7990 6GB officially launch, we've got a whole bunch of setups included in our graphs today. Since the launch of the new AMD dual-GPU model, we've had the opportunity to look at it in a number of ways.

We started off by checking out the performance in its reference form, and then we went into the overclocking side of things - if you have had a chance to look at that article, you'll know that it didn't go very well. While we had hoped to get a second HD 7990 6GB to find out what CrossFireX performance was like, it hasn't been possible so far. Instead, though, we paired the HD 7990 6GB with a HD 7970 GHz Edition to find out what CrossFireX performance with three GPUs was like. If you've seen that article, you would know we were impressed with what that $1,400 setup was able to offer.

With so many high-end setups looked at lately, it will be interesting to see how the overclocked SLI setup we're looking at today goes. As always, because we've already looked at the card in detail, we won't be covering it again. Instead if you want to take a closer look, we recommend you check out the standalone review we linked to above. From here we'll take a quick look at our testbed, talk about the setups that you'll see in our graphs today and quickly cover the overclocking, before we get into the performance numbers.

Benchmarks - Test System Setup

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 99

We would like to thank the following companies for supplying and supporting us with our test system hardware and equipment: Intel, ASUS and Corsair.

We've got a bunch of high-end setups in our graphs today. From the NVIDIA side we've got the GTX TITAN SuperClocked cards in SLI and overclocked. We've got the Gainward GTX 650 Ti Boost in SLI overclocked to over 1100MHz, along with the EVGA GTX TITAN SuperClocked running at its reference speed, running at 975MHz when overclocked by us and of course running in SLI at its out of box speeds.

On the AMD side we've got the PowerColor HD 7950 PCS running at over 1100MHz along with the HD 7970 GHz Edition and HD 7990 6GB running at their reference clocks. We've also got the HD 7990 and HD 7970 GHz Edition running together in CrossFireX mode. While we'd normally also include the overclocked results from the HD 7990 6GB, because of the way the overclocking results worked out, we won't be including them today.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 01

Before we get into the performance, we need to look at overclocking. Looking above you can see the out of the box clocks on the EVGA GTX TITAN SuperClocked is 876MHz on the core which is pushed to 928MHz via boost, while the 6GB of GDDR5 comes in at 6008MHz QDR. When overclocked you can see the core was a little lower than when we looked at single card performance, coming in at 950MHz or 1002MHz via boost. As for the memory, that was pushed to 6240MHz QDR, which is in line with the single GPU overclock, actually slightly higher.

The FPS Numbers Explained

When we benchmark our video cards and look at the graphs, we aim to get to a certain level of FPS which we consider playable. While many may argue that the human eye can't see over 24 FPS or 30 FPS, any true gamer will tell you that as we climb higher in Frames Per Seconds (FPS), the overall gameplay feels smoother. There are three numbers we're looking out for when it comes to our benchmarks.

30 FPS - It's the minimum number we aim for when it comes to games. If you're not dropping below 30 FPS during games, you're going to have a nice and smooth gaming experience. The ideal situation is that even in a heavy fire fight, the minimum stays above 30 FPS making sure that you can continue to aim easily or turn the corner with no dramas.

60 FPS - It's the average we look for when we don't have a minimum coming at us. If we're getting an average of 60 FPS, we should have a minimum of 30 FPS or better and as mentioned above, it means we've got some smooth game play happening.

120 FPS - The new number that we've been hunting down over recent months. If you're the owner of a 120 Hz monitor, to get the most out of it you want to get around the 120 FPS mark. Moving from 60 FPS / 60 Hz to 120 FPS / 120 Hz brings with it a certain fluidity that can't really be explained, but instead has to be experienced. Of course, if you're buying a 120 Hz monitor to take advantage of 3D, an average of 120 FPS in our benchmark means that in 3D you will have an average of 60 FPS, which again means you should expect some smooth gameplay.

Why are some graphs incomplete?

Adding new game benchmarks is a long, tedious and time consuming task as every video card has to be re-tested in those new benchmarks. Because of that reason we have always just evaluated our benchmark line up every six months. To stay up to date and current with the latest benchmarks and games available, we've changed our approach to adding new benchmarks.

Our benchmark line up will progress and be updated as newer more intensive games with benchmarks comes to light. While this will mean that initially you may only see a single video card in those particular graphs, as the weeks go on and we test more and more video cards, the results will grow quickly. This will help keep our benchmark line up as up to date as possible as we introduce and remove games on a constant basis.

Lost Planet 2 is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition which is also made by Capcom, taking place ten years after the events of the first game, on the same fictional planet. The story takes place back on E.D.N. III 10 years after the events of the first game. The snow has melted to reveal jungles and more tropical areas that have taken the place of more frozen regions. The plot begins with Mercenaries fighting against Jungle Pirates. After destroying a mine, the Mercenaries continue on to evacuate the area, in which a Category-G Akrid appears and attacks them. After being rescued, they find out their evacuation point (Where the Category-G appeared) was a set-up and no pick up team awaited them. The last words imply possible DLC additions to the game, "There's nothing to be gained by wiping out snow pirates... unless you had some kind of grudge."

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 25

F1 2012 is a little funny when it comes to SLI. It seems on the super high-end setups the SLI setup actually hits a wall earlier than the single card setup.

Saying that means that you can see that the overclocked performance is pretty much in line with the out of the box clocked SLI setup. Fortunately, while the wall comes a little earlier, the numbers overall are still extremely strong at all resolutions.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 28

Nexuiz has become so much fun to bench with the GTX TITAN SLI setup because of the massive performance gains it sees.

You can see even at 2560 x 1600 that the out of the box overclocked setup still fell shy of the 60 FPS number, which we want to see for a solid gaming experience. Overclocked, though, you can see we get a good 7 FPS into it with a strong 67 FPS being seen.

Tomb Raider was released on 5 March 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows to universal critical acclaim.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 33

Tomb Raider performance is great at all resolutions and that 1920 x 1200 127 FPS minimum is really awesome for anyone with a 120Hz monitor.

It means that if you turn VSYNC on your monitor that you'd just be sitting at a constant 120 FPS, which would make for some truly smooth gameplay.

Benchmarks - High Quality AA and AF

High Quality AA and AF

While we test all our games with maximum in-game settings, turning on Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Antistrophic Filtering (AF) helps take the intensity of our testing to another level.

Here we see video cards go from playable FPS to an unplayable FPS and the real power houses continue to help break that 60 FPS mark we always aim for to provide a smooth gaming experience.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 35

With AA and AF turned on you can see that performance is pretty much maxed out on the GTX TITAN SLI setup at both resolutions.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 36

Metro 2033 numbers are strong at both resolutions with the SLI setup. Overclocking of course pushes those numbers even further with just outstanding performance being seen.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 37

Just Cause 2 with AA and AF on follows the trend of excellent gains and overall excellent performance.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 38

Sleeping Dogs with AA and AF on is super intensive and you can see while we've got excellent numbers at both resolutions, the 2560 x 1600 number of 71 FPS is quite low considering the cost of the setup. Nonetheless, it's a playable number, and that's what we want to see.

Temperature Test

The temperature of the core is pulled from MSI Afterburner with the max reading used after a completed run off 3DMark Vantage and the Performance preset.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 40

The GTX TITAN is a warm running video card and when it comes to overclocking we saw the temperature jump a couple of degrees.

In SLI we see it jump a little higher again. We're still below the threshold, but when it comes to this kind of setup, we'd highly recommend a case with strong airflow.

Sound Test

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 41

Overall noise levels don't change much at all. If a slightly more aggressive profile was selected, you could probably drop the temperature a bit at the cost of more noise.

As always, though, if you're overclocking, setting manual fan speeds is a fairly easy process, if you don't want to drop the temperature.

Power Consumption Test

Using our PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01 or "Power Thingy" as it has become quickly known as to our readers, we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated graphics cards installed. Keep in mind; it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember though; while our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10% more. We test at the exact same stage every time; therefore tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum - only a SSD hard drive is used with a single CD ROM and minimal cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items, the draw is going to be higher.

EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB SuperClocked Video Cards in SLI Overclocked 42

With the extra voltage running through the cards, it doesn't surprise us that power draw jumps up.

While we see no change at the idle draw, we've got an extra 60 Watt being pulled under load. Like we've mentioned before, though, if you're buying this kind of setup, we'd like to think that you're purchasing or have purchased a more than capable 1000-watt or above power supply.

Final Thoughts

What a pair of EVGA GTX TITAN SuperClocked video cards can do is truly amazing when overclocking is thrown into the mix. Coming off the disappointing results that was on offer from the AMD Radeon HD 7990 6GB when overclocked, what we saw here today was really amazing, with massive performance gains being seen in many areas.

When you spend in excess of $2,000 you expect some truly amazing performance, and you also should expect to not have to overclock the cards to get playable numbers. Besides Nexuiz at 2560 x 1600, you really don't have to. There's no denying at times, though, the 20% gains that are seen would indeed come in handy if you move to Surround Vision resolutions or a 120Hz monitor.

There's little to complain about when it comes to this kind of setup outside of the price tag. I think it's still fairly safe to say that when it comes to the $1,000+ setups, the HD 7990 6GB and HD 7970 GHz Edition in CrossFireX does look more impressive from a value point of view. CrossFireX, though, is not a perfect technology, and at the moment, overclocking isn't an option with some negative effects being seen.

Throwing a third or fourth video card into the mix is also going to push the numbers even higher. Looking at the performance we've got here today including the numbers out of some of the most intensive engines on the market it, it feels safe to say that you're probably better off not even looking at three or four way setups unless you're going down the path of multi monitors, or possibly a 4k resolution monitor.

Getting the kind of performance where you don't need to worry about in-game settings costs money - especially when you're talking 120Hz monitors with 2560 x 1440 / 1600 resolutions. The GTX TITAN SLI setup is indeed one of those setups that lets you install any game and know that within game settings maxed out, it's going to be smooth.

With some decent headroom with overclocking as well, you've got even more wiggle room when it comes to FPS in the future.
