Introduction

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 02

As I write this, MSI literally just released the latest version of MSI Afterburner 1.6.0 Beta only a few hours ago. The fact that MSI released a new version of Afterburner doesn't warrant its own article.

The fact that MSI offered Voltage Adjustment to the new GeForce GTX 480 video card in the release though, very much does. Voltage Adjustment on video cards has become such a big thing these days; companies offering such good cooling options mean that the video cards can handle a bit more voltage, which in turn is offering some outstanding performance increases.

MSI have done extremely well; anyone who's overclocking is using their software and in every screenshot you're seeing the MSI logo, no matter what card you're using. A constant flow of updates and people wanting to get the most out of a video card means we're seeing it so often. These days when someone asks what do I use to overclock my video card the chances are they're being told MSI Afterburner.

Due to the fact that we want to offer this article to you in the shortest time frame possible, the word count is going to be down, as most of my effort is placed in benchmarking.

On the next page we'll have a few screenshots and after that it's straight into the benchmarking!

GTX 480 Overclocking

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 01

As we mentioned overclocking was done with MSI Afterburner; speaking to MSI they told us that a Core Voltage of 1100 was safe; so I went to 1113 because I live life on the edge.

At first I did my overclocking with the fan left on AUTO; the problem is I had Vantage crashing at core clocks lower than what I ended up with. It seemed that the fan wasn't speeding up enough to keep the video card cool enough and in turn Vantage would freeze up by the second test. By moving to 100% we got through Vantage no problems; so we thought we would see if we could go higher again and we ended up with about another 15MHz.

As for the final overclock and how it compares to the reference one; 841MHz on the core which is way up from the stock 701MHz. The Shader clock has of course increased; that's gone from 1401MHz to 1682MHz.

While the memory might not get any love from the voltage adjustment we did manage to increase that from 3696MHz QDR to a very yummy 4200MHz QDR.

That's some serious clocks; hopefully it brings with it some serious performance!

Temperature and Sound Tests

Temperature Tests

With the TES 1326 Infrared Thermometer literally in hand we found ourselves getting real-world temperatures from the products we test at load (3D clock speeds).

There are two places we pull temperature from - the back of the card directly behind the core and if the card is dual slot and has an exhaust point we also pull a temperate from there, as seen in the picture.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 38

Sound Tests

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 39

Power Consumption Tests

Using our new PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01 or "Power Thingy" as it has become quickly known as to our readers, we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated graphics cards installed. Keep in mind; it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember though; while our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10% more. We test at the exact same stage every time; therefore tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum - only a 7,200RPM SATA-II single hard drive is used without CD ROM or many cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items, the draw is going to be higher.

Total Performance Rating (TPR)

Total Performance Rating

The TPR graph is a combination of all our benchmarks in which NVIDIA and ATI are on an even playing field. This includes benchmarks where PhysX can be forced off like Dark Void and Batman: Arkham Asylum, but not Darkest of Days.

The TPR number is a combination of:

3DMark Vantage, Heaven Benchmark V2, CINEBENCH R11.5, Resident Evil 5, BattleForge, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., Far Cry 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum (PhysX Off), Dark Void (PhysX Off) and our three High Quality tests which include Far Cry 2, Resident Evil 5 and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.

All of the benchmark results achieved are then combined into a single number. As this graph will grow over time and cards won't be re-tested, next to each model you'll find the driver version that was used when the card was benchmarked.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 41

Total Value Rating (TVR)

Total Value Rating

The TVR graph is the TPR score divided by the price of the video card. The price of the video card is based on the list price of the model on Newegg.com. In the event the card isn't listed, it will be based on the U.S. $ MSRP given to us by the manufacturer.

In the event we can't source a price from either, the product will not receive a TVR rating. As with our TPR graph, the amount of video cards on the list will grow over time and the price of the model won't change from what it was when first reviewed. For this reason the U.S. $ price that the card is based off will be included next to the name of the model.

In the event you want to find the TVR rating yourself based on the current price, all you have to do is simply divide the TPR number by the list price.

TVR numbers are rounded to the nearest whole number; 100.3 will be 100; 100.8 will be 101 and 100.5 will be rounded down to 100.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 42

Vantage Suicide Run

If you're from GIGABYTE Tech, please look away so you don't see what I did to your GTX 480.

When I asked MSI what was a safe voltage to go to they responded back with "only 1.1"; so I asked "1125 not safe?" and they responded back with "it's too hot, you can only tweak 0.1 v."

Since we already were running 1113 what was a little bit more going to do? So we moved the slider to the max which was 1125. Once we did that and hit apply our machine BSOD and we couldn't turn it back on... just kidding :)

All I wanted was a clock speed that would run a single loop of Vantage and give us a P score. Looking at the full screen you can see the clocks we achieved along with the score. Of course we wouldn't recommend doing this 24 / 7; plus the fact of the matter is that it won't run everything.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Overclocking with Voltage Adjustment 10

As a note the GTX 480 at default achieved P21491, at the speeds that ran all our benchmarks we achieved P25241.

Final Thoughts

The first thing we have to say is that this isn't practical. When we say that we mean it's not practical in the sense that you cannot have the fan running at 100% when you're gaming; honestly 82dB is loud. I mean - it's really loud!

If you go down the path of water cooling the model though, you're not going to have this issue; the other thing is because we ran on such a tight schedule and AUTO didn't want to play nice, we just cranked it to the top. To be honest, everything might be sweet at say 70%; of course that's something that you can find out without any real issue.

Performance is insane! There are some absolutely massive gains seen especially at 2560 x 1600. Some of the most noteworthy scores would be a P25k run on a single GPU air cooled video card and almost P26k in our suicide run. V2 Heaven outperforming the HD 5970 and the GTX 480 going from matching or being behind the HD 5970 in H.A.W.X. and RE5 AA benchmarks to being clearly in front.

If you had to put it all in perspective our TPR graph paints the best picture; we've gone from 42,514 to 49,027, which equates to an increase of over 15%.

There's no denying that NVIDIA had some issues with Fermi; what this shows us today though is the potential. The next generation of NVIDIA videos cards I think will be a force to be reckoned with.
